Have you ever felt it? That feeling of being adrift in a sea of endless opinions. You scroll through your phone, and a hundred different voices tell you how to live, how to parent, how to believe, how to find happiness. The news shouts, influencers preach, and even well-meaning friends offer conflicting advice.
I remember a time, not too long ago, when I was sitting on my living room floor, surrounded by uncertainty. A decision I needed to make felt monumental, and the noise of the world was deafening. In a moment of quiet desperation, I looked up and simply whispered, “God, are you there? I just need to know what you want me to do. I need clarity.”
That feeling—that deep, human yearning for a clear, trusted voice in the middle of chaos—is universal. And I want to testify to you today that our loving Heavenly Father has not left us alone in the storm. He has given us an anchor. He has given us living prophets.
Why Living Prophets Are Here
Think about it for a moment. Throughout the Bible, whenever God wanted to communicate with His children, He called a prophet. He spoke to Noah about the coming flood, to Abraham about a promised land, to Moses from a burning bush, and to Isaiah about the coming of the Savior.
Why would a God who is the same “yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8) suddenly stop communicating that way?
The simple, beautiful truth is: He hasn’t.
Living prophets are here for the same reason they have always been here: because God loves us perfectly. He knew our day would be filled with unique challenges and complex questions that weren’t faced in ancient times. He provided a lighthouse keeper for our day, someone to stand on the watchtower and help us navigate the treacherous waters of modern life safely back to Him.

What Is The Role of Living Prophets
So, what does a prophet actually do? It’s not about predicting the future or having some mystical power. Their role is sacred, practical, and profoundly Christ-centered.
A living prophet is a man called by God to be His spokesman on the earth. His primary responsibilities are to:
- Testify of Jesus Christ: This is their foremost duty. Every message, every sermon, every piece of counsel is meant to point our souls toward our Savior, Jesus Christ.
- Teach God’s Truth: They clarify doctrine and help us understand the scriptures in the context of our day. They help us separate cultural trends from eternal, unchanging truth.
- Receive Revelation and Guidance: Just as Moses received the Ten Commandments, living prophets receive guidance from God for the benefit of the entire world. They warn us of spiritual dangers and show us the path to safety and peace.
They are, in essence, a shepherd for the Lord’s flock, guiding us with love and a clear sense of direction that comes directly from the Source of all truth.
Why Living Prophets Help Us Understand God
The very existence of a living prophet teaches us something beautiful about the nature of God. It shows us that He is not a distant, silent deity. He is a living, breathing, involved Father.
He cares enough to call a spokesman. He is invested enough in our daily lives to provide customized, up-to-the-minute guidance. He is loving enough to ensure the communication lines between heaven and earth are always open. When we listen to a prophet, we get a glimpse into the heart and mind of God in real-time. We learn what matters to Him right now.
How Living Prophets Help Us Find Answers
This is where it becomes deeply personal. When you have those questions that keep you up at night—the ones you whispered on your living room floor—the words of a living prophet can be a divine starting point for your answer.
The process is one of beautiful spiritual partnership:
- Listen with an open heart: Humbly listen to their counsel, whether it’s spoken, written, or broadcast. Pay attention to recurring themes and gentle promptings.
- Ponder their teachings: Don’t just let the words wash over you. Think about them. How do they apply to your life, your family, your specific challenge?
- Take it to the Lord: This is the key. Take their counsel and your questions to God in prayer. Ask Him, in the name of Jesus Christ, to confirm the truth of their words to your own heart through the Holy Spirit.
This process transforms you from a passive listener into an active seeker of truth. The prophet points the way, but God confirms the path directly to you. It’s a pattern for receiving personal revelation.
Talk About General Conference
Twice a year, we have a remarkable opportunity to see this principle in action during a worldwide broadcast called General Conference. For one weekend, the living prophet and other apostles and leaders of the Church address the entire world.
I like to think of it as a sacred appointment with the Lord. It’s a time to set aside the noise of the world and feast on spiritual truth. I’ve found that when I prepare for this weekend by coming with my specific questions, God always gives me answers through the words of His chosen servants. It may be a single sentence in a talk or a feeling that comes as a speaker testifies of Christ, but the clarity and peace that follow are undeniable.
An Invitation
My dear friends, if you feel adrift, if you are searching for clarity in the chaos, I invite you to seek out and listen to the words of God’s living prophets. Don’t take my word for it. Put it to the test. Find their recent messages. Listen with a real desire to know if they are truly speaking for the Lord.
Then, take what you learn and talk to God about it. Ask Him. I promise that as you do, you will feel the steadying, guiding, and loving hand of a Father in Heaven who has not, and will never, leave you to navigate the storms of life alone.
You are loved. There are answers. And there is a clear voice waiting for you to hear it.
