In this world where emojis mask emotions, apologies sometimes sound insincere. Saying "sorry" is more than just asking for forgiveness. It means much more!

“Sorry seems to be the hardest word.” Yet nowadays, it is one of the most overused phrases. “Sorry” now sounds more like lip service. It has somehow degraded into a very insincere word. And in this world of virtual communication, this gesture of remorse has already been masked by emojis. It seems like people apologize to get something instead of to give something unselfishly. When people say “sorry,” they want to gain forgiveness right away and sometimes forget that, often, what the other person really needs to hear is “I was wrong.” These words can do more to repair damaged relationships because they involve giving more of oneself rather than just gratifying the need for acceptance.

Saying “sorry” is only the beginning. Apologizing is just the start of the process of restitution. Whether it is at restitution of trust, stolen things or stolen time – it is only the first step of many.

Saying “sorry” as soon as you can will create the opportunity to mend broken relationships and prevent further tension.

Apologize ASAP

Whether you are at fault or not, take the initiative to apologize first and apologize quickly. Relationships become strained when late apologies are common. Don’t be afraid to say sorry because you are too occupied with looking for the perfect words. Look people in the eye and acknowledge your mistake. In simple words, say why you are apologizing and do so calmly, perhaps after taking a few deep breaths.

Human emotions are real and need to be acknowledged.

Validate Others’ Emotions

In the rush to gain back favor from people, it is usual to say something like, “Don’t make a big deal out of it,” or “Just forget it! It’s nothing…” Yes, taking offense is a choice; but to fully dismiss that you have hurt someone by telling them to forget what they are going through, is like rubbing salt in the wound. We are human and being such we sometimes feel hurt, betrayal, offense, and many others. I don’t think feeling these things is wrong. It is natural. We need to acknowledge that. The Savior has felt all of these emotions as well. He felt pain and wept when He knew that his friend, Lazarus, had died. (John 11:35) He must have been very frustrated when He saw that the Temple had been made into “a house of merchandise”. (John 2:13-16) Even the Son of God went through all these human emotions, for that is how He is able to understand and succor us. Must we not acknowledge those same emotions in the people we are dealing with especially among those that we have offended? “The son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than He?” (Doctrine & Covenants 122:8)

Apology needs to go beyond saying “sorry” and efforts to make things better need to be continued.

Consistent Effort

Strive to mend broken relationships and strengthen them continuously. Make apologies an opportunity to give true sincerity instead of just taking forgiveness. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, keep working on your relationships. Investing in human connections empowers us to repair lives. It empowers us to repair the world. No effort is ever wasted. When we sincerely acknowledge our mistakes, saying “sorry” is more meaningful. Showing remorse and empathy makes saying “sorry” more acceptable. Working hard to restore of what has been lost – may it be good reputation, material things, or confidence – makes saying “sorry” more active and effective.

There is beauty in apologies. In our quest to be forgiven and make things alright again, we find ourselves changed. That is where the power lies. For it doesn’t just make the offended one feel better, it makes the offender become a better person. It is a refining process through which the natural tendencies of man are replaced by heavenly virtues. So we see, saying “sorry” is never enough, but it is a very good place to start.

Have you ever felt like you have an ordinary, boring life? In this age of Instagram and Facebook, we see our friends and acquaintances posting pictures and videos of their travels and other awesome things that are happening in their lives. All of this may sometimes make us feel that if we don’t have anything interesting to post, our lives are not as great. But what we miss when we have these thoughts is not the opportunity to travel or have and do awesome things. We miss out on the chance to look at our lives and see the great adventures that we have experienced, are experiencing, and will be experiencing, even in what seems to be mundane and trivial.

The Wonder and Joys of Childhood

When I look back at my childhood memories. I am amazed at how awesome my imagination was. I grew up not having a lot of toys because my family only had enough for the basic necessities. But I look back and I feel like I didn’t lack anything. I remember playing outside and imagining that I was a soldier and scraping my knees from crawling trying to dodge bullets. There was a time when I believed that I was a mermaid. My skin got burned from staying on the beach for long periods of time. I learned to cook rice from playing house – sneaking into our kitchen to get a fistful of grains and cooking them in a can – with real fire made from twigs. Then my father, who was a fireman, would lecture us about fire safety when we got caught. Those moments were priceless! I am grateful for them all – the mischief and the learning moments.

To love and be loved in return is an opportunity we can take as we live our life’s adventure.

Dating, Courtship & Marriage

Falling in love is a great adventure. People may or may not agree but love is a beautiful journey. My encounter with love started with the crushes that I had when I was a teenager. With the butterflies in my stomach, I learned that love is not always thrills and excitement. It can also involve heartaches and betrayals. I look back at the strange and funny feeling of liking someone. There were also moments when I needed to give way to other girls because we had the same crushes. When I remember those moments, I can’t help but laugh and also realize that some relationships are more important that other relationships. No wonder love is the most common story and song topic of all time. It takes us on a roller coaster ride. But for me, the greatest adventure was finding that one true love and choosing to stay together. I am now in an adventure that I consider the most important. My marriage has been nice, warm, scary, joyful, weird, lovely, and all the other emotions rolled into one. It is a great opportunity for me to be experiencing this type of adventure.

As we face the sunsets of our lives, let’s look back and find wonder and joy even in the simple things that happened to us.

The Journey Towards the Golden Years

I consider myself to be in the middle of my life. I have a goal age when I want to “retire” and I am about half of it right now. At this stage, I look forward to what the coming years have in store for me. Of course I feel the fear of the unknown, but also the excitement of someone who is trying to make a fallout shelter for the end of the world. Now, my adventure is preparing for the sunset of my life. There are still a lot of things to do and sometimes I get overwhelmed. But I have family and friends on this adventure with me. I feel passionately the need to fight for things that I know are important. Although I choose my battles wisely, I am very vocal about a few things that are precious to me. I fight for women and family, for truth, and for the environment. Part of my advocacy is wellness and good health. We have things we need to fight for in life and doing so is a great adventure in itself. I think aging is graceful if we are striving for something better.

As I look at life, we are all on a great adventure. It is sad that some people think their lives are less than those of others because nothing much is happening. There are a lot of things that are happening. We can make a lot of things happen. Our lives are not the same but life is a great adventure in itself. We fight villains and we stand with heroes everyday. As we journey home to our God, let us make every day count. May we leave a legacy of joy, learning, love and purpose as we live our own adventures.

Many principles of happiness focus on the warm and pleasant feelings of the heart. But happiness can be also found through unpleasant times in our lives.

The post 2 Principles of Happiness We Might Have Gotten Wrong appeared first on morefaith.ph.

In our search for happiness, we might have read articles, watched videos, and listened to inspirational talks on happiness. These resources often include helpful advice on how to be happy such as focusing on the positive things, choosing to see the good, and dismissing feelings of loneliness, among others. While all these principles of happiness can be effective ways to find joy, we might have gotten some of them wrong. Here are a few common tips that we might look at a little differently.

We should be positive in all things. We have been counseled to choose a positive attitude and find joy no matter our circumstances because that is the way we can obtain peace in our hearts. With all the challenges that each of us encounters in life, looking at the brighter side of things is indeed helpful. Focusing on the positive side of our circumstances brightens our hope for better days and strengthens our resolve to make our situation better.

However, positivity doesn’t mean not feeling sad, distressed, or disappointed. Focusing on the positive side of things doesn’t mean only having pleasant feelings. There are many circumstances in our lives such as losing a loved one or a job, failing an exam, leaving home, saying goodbye to a friend, missing an interview, and many others that might trigger these feelings. Having these unpleasant feelings is a fact of life. Even Jesus Christ wept and felt deep sadness when Lazarus died. We should not push aside these emotions and most importantly, we should not think that these feelings are putting our happiness in jeopardy.

Positivity is a state of mind. And positivity amidst these feelings can take one form or another—sadness that leads to empathy, disappointment that leads to earnest prayer, grief that leads to repentance, and heartbreak that leads us closer to Christ.

We should pay attention to the good. Of course focusing on the good is great. It helps us see the little, often unnoticed, gifts of life. It also helps us to have a grateful and happy heart. But paying attention to the bad also may not be a bad idea. Taking a step back and evaluating the ‘not so good’ parts of our lives can lead us to greater heights of happiness. Looking at our often-drained finances can lead us to reconsider paying a full-tithe. Assessing a failed romantic relationship can lead us to evaluate how we spend time with the ones we love. Asking what went wrong after being disqualified in a try-out can lead us to practice and work harder to better our craft.

Paying attention to the bad side of things can also be good if it helps us find ways to do better. Doing this can be a prelude to brighter opportunities and greater heights of happiness.

As we continue our quest for happiness, may we always remember that happiness is not all about the warm, fuzzy, and pleasant feelings of the heart. Sometimes, happiness can be found amidst and through troubled and unpleasant times in our lives. How is that possible? It is made possible through Christ who has borne all our sorrows and sufferings. He succors all those who seek Him for comfort and showers happiness on those who seek His name and do His will. He enlightens the minds of those who seek further understanding. So the next time we read a principle of happiness that confuses us, let’s seek further light from the Author of Happiness Himself, even Jesus Christ, the Savior.

While listening to a talk during an Area Conference with Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, I was reminded of his talk in the 2013 October General Conference. That talk was a life changing moment for me and I was moved by the Spirit to open my heart to the world of mental sickness and emotional disorder. So, when Sister Vernoni Dulalia spoke of the Church initiative to help address the stigma of being mentally and emotionally challenged in this country, my heart swelled with gratitude.

The issue of mental illness is real and is affecting more people than we know of.

The Philippines considers mental and emotional health problems to be minor, compared to other maladies. Whenever someone talks about being very sad or depressed, there is a cultural tendency to assume that the person is just acting out or seeking attention. The irony is that attention is actually needed. Filipinos are known to be resilient – strong in the face of poverty or tragedy. Maybe this is why being mentally and emotionally challenged is considered taboo. This maybe the reason people afflicted by mental or emotional conditions feel deprived of help.

The Lord is Mindful of All of His Children

The Savior’s love extends to all of His children. If you are experiencing depression or any other disorders, that does not mean He loves you less. Always remember that He gave his life for you. Yes you! That is not a small thing. The Son of God suffered and died for you. And because of His eternal love for you, you can ask Him for help. You can expect help. He can whisper peace to your soul and help make your burdens light, no matter the circumstances. He will be with you every step of the way, supporting you, even in difficult times. He is your older brother, and your light in the darkness.

Your Family and Friends Love You

You may be a family of one or a part of a huge clan, trust that the people around you know and care about you. Even if you feel that you do not matter, there are people who love and worry about you. Never fall for Satan’s lie that no one cares, because someone does. Talk to your family. Talk to your friends. Even if they cannot understand everything you are going through, expressing your feelings is a giant step towards healing.

Professional Help is Available

There are people who study and specialize in these matters. You can take advantage of the services they offer. Psychiatrists, psychologists, support forums, and other groups provide guidance and refuge. There are places you can go to talk to someone whose chosen mission is to understand and help. Hopeline (https://www.hopeline-nc.org/) is one place you can call and get help. You can even volunteer. The Church has also initiated a movement to help in this area (https://www.lds.org/mentalhealth?lang=eng).

The Lord’s timing is perfect because now that light is being shed on this issue, people are becoming more and more aware and willing to offer mental and emotional support. There are ways to get help. If you are struggling mentally or emotionally, reach out! Help is available. And if you know of someone who might be having trouble in this aspect, reach out! Make yourself available. We are all in this together.

As we once again start a new year, making resolutions can sometimes seem rehashed. How do we take steps so this year will be better? As I look back to 2018, I realize that I have made quite a number of bad choices that somehow affected my progression.

One of the main focuses for me and my family in 2018 was to better our financial stewardship. I then searched out materials that helped us improve in that area.

One of the things that I focused on is how to recover from bad investments or bad choices when it comes to money. I realized that the principles I have learned with regards to money are also applicable when it comes to our spirituality. To the Lord there is no demarcation line between the temporal and the spiritual, because to Him everything is spiritual. We are still striving to improve, financially and spiritually, but my positivity that the future is bright has increased substantially.

So here are some tips I learned about how to recover from bad choices (financial and spiritual):

1. Don’t Lose Faith

2. Immediately Try for a Refund

3. Don’t Fall for the Sunk Cost Trap

4. Factor in the Opportunity Cost

5. Be Grateful You Know Better

If money is the currency for financial investment, the currency we use in our day to day lives is TIME. Time is the currency of life but unlike money, once time is spent, we cannot take it back. So how do we relate the principles I have shared to our progression in this mortal probation?

“The future is as bright as your faith.”

1. Don’t Lose Faith

This one is simple. With the bad choices we made in 2018, we may feel discouraged and feel like giving up. But I hope that despite the fact that we made a number of mistakes, we do not forget that we are children of God. And that we are here on earth to learn. The best teacher sometimes is our mistakes. According to studies, the best way to learn is by doing things in real life and actually exercising our agency. So don’t lose faith in yourself, because the moment you do, you are holding back from the good things ahead. It is natural to feel sad, angry, or frustrated but all of these are a matter of choice. You can choose to recover from negative things. Regain the confidence that you can still get to your future goals. It helps if you sing “I Am A Child of God” over and over again.

Repentance is a reset button we can use.

2. Immediately Try for a Refund

This one is a bit ironic since time cannot be taken back. So how do we get a refund then? For me, this means to immediately repent. Yes, it is true that we cannot take back time but we can repent immediately because for me repentance is a reset button. It does not instantly get things back to normal, but it begins the process so that no matter how long it takes, you have already started on the path. It does not matter who we are, whether we have made huge mistakes, or we have been diligent in obeying the commandments, we all need to repent. Repentance is a continuous process of change and improvement, because being subject to the Fall, we all need to work to progress and be worthy to be with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ again. As fallen creatures, it must be our goal to progress every single day of our lives and repentance is the way. If we are at the first rung of the ladder today, we need to strive to be better tomorrow, however small the steps are. Sometimes we make bad choices, and fall back a few steps, but we can get up, shake off the dust and continue moving up the ladder. Repentance does that. You can confidently claim your right for second chances, because that’s what the Atonement is for. The Savior of the world died so we can have second chances, so we can have our refund.

3. Don’t Fall for the Sunk Cost Trap

What is a sunk cost? A sunk cost is something that you cannot get back. An example is a downpayment you can’t get back once you have signed a contract. In life, we also have sunk costs. The could-have-beens, if-onlys, I-wish-I-could-turn-back-times, etc. We just need to move on. Like Lot’s wife, let us not look back at the things that could hinder our progression. We are blinded to the future if we only keep looking toward the past.

Carefully weigh things over to make better choices.

4. Factor in the Opportunity Cost

An opportunity cost is the value of the opportunities that are given to you. Example, you lose your opportunity to learn in school if you choose to spend your time skipping classes. In life, we are faced with a lot of choices, every single day. There are consequences to every choice we make. If we know how to factor in Opportunity Costs, we will be able to make right choices. Here’s a scenario. We are all given 24 hours every single day. How we spend those 24 hours is how we are spending life’s currency. So if you choose to use social media upon waking up and not read the scriptures, the cost of receiving divine revelation first thing in the morning is lost to you. Or if you choose to play video games instead of studying for your lessons, the opportunity of getting good grades is lost to you. I hope we understand that in everything we think, say or do, there is a cost. With each cost is attached an opportunity that we either gain or lose.

Free yourself from the grasps of regret and be grateful you know better.

5. Be Grateful You Know Better

We should be grateful that we have learned from our mistakes. Hopefully, we are better people because of the experiences we have gone through. I hope that every single mistake last year will be a badge we can wear, not because we made them but because we have overcome them, or are striving to, and we can rise up as stronger and better individuals. For that’s what this life is all about: learning and growing.

We have a lot of opportunities to grow. We have things we can look forward to because we have the Savior on our side. I know He is cheering us on despite our shortcomings. I am grateful I know of the Plan of Salvation, for it guides the choices I make every single day. I have my triumphs and I have my downfalls but I am grateful all the same. May we all look forward with faith and not just work hard, but work smart. Let us be worthy of the Holy Ghost so we will be guided to make right choices. I know that Heavenly Father wants us to be happy and He is always ready to bless us with success and abundance if we do our end of the bargain.

Can this be love I am feeling right now?

We all want to be loved, feel loved and to love. We are searching for love which is true and can last forever. But how do you know when you are in love and if it is true? I remember my parents always saying during my teenage years, “if you meet a man in whose presence you feel a desire to achieve, who inspires you to do your best, and to make yourself better, such a man is worthy of your love and is awakening love in your heart. In his presence you should feel that you would like to be everything that a perfect woman should be, for he will inspire you to that ideal.”

“Be friends first and sweethearts second.” Bruce C. Hafen

My husband and I met John (not his real name) waiting for his bride on their special day. Dondi asked him about their love story, and he gladly shared it with us. He said that they met when they were still in college and he knew that she was a Latter-day Saint. He said that she was very attractive and a very special girl. She loved to read the Book of Mormon with him and share her testimony of the church. He doesn’t remember ever feeling pressured or pushed to be a member of the church, but her patience, honesty, and sincerity helped him to open his heart and to listen to the missionaries. After that, he was baptized and he knew for himself that everything was true– not because he loved her, but because that’s what he felt. He told us that he wanted to be better each day that he was with her. Then they both fasted and prayed about getting married.

Dondi and I admired him so much. He loved her so much, but he also respected her and never took advantage of her. We were pleased to witness their special day.

How do you define true love?

President Spencer W. Kimball said, “If one really loves another, one would rather die for that person than to injure him.”

Many of us think of love as a physical attraction, and casually speak of “falling in love” and “love at first sight.” You cannot say it’s true love the first time you meet each other, although some might say it is. Love can only be true if when you see that person you desire to be better, you are willing to sacrifice your own happiness for that person, and you are committed to do everything in good times and in bad.

President Kimball added that love is a process, love is not a declaration, and love is not an announcement. Love is not a passing fancy. Love is not an expediency. Love is not a convenience. Love requires personal action.

True love is faith, confidence, understanding and partnership. There must be great devotion and companionship. It requires cleanliness, progress, sacrifice and selflessness. This kind of love never gets tired but stands through sickness and sorrow, accomplishment and disappointment, through time and eternity.

How to strengthen your love and be not afraid

I think most of us experience heart aches or break ups, in not only romantic relationships but even with friends and family. When it is too painful we sometimes give up on loving someone and choose not to love again. We become afraid to fail and get hurt. I believe there are a lot of reasons why it happens to us, but there are ways to strengthen your love and overcome your fears of loving again.

Be more prayerful in times of trial. We must have the desire to come closer to the Lord during our trials. We must continually be hopeful in our prayers for a bright tomorrow. Always express gratitude in our prayers for another learning experience, and take it positively.

Give more service. During trying times, our natural tendency is to think more of our feelings or condition than to think about others. Let us be more outward than inward. When we serve others, we learn that we are not alone and we come to realize that we are still blessed by the Lord.

Learn more about the Savior’s love. Studying the scriptures and listening to the counsel of the prophet will help us understand and internalize more of the Lord’s unconditional love for us. Our Heavenly Father never gives up on us, no matter how many times we have failed Him by our unwise choices.

I had a friend who is very dear to me. There was a time that she experienced a painful break up from the love of her life. Her love for this man was unquestionable, and she was deeply wounded by the choice of her boyfriend to let her go. But she was brave enough to face this test. I saw her the next day wearing a big a smile and I could sense the hope that she had in her heart that everything would be alright. Every time she remembered those feelings of being broken, she would just stop to meditate and talk to the Lord. She also made more time to reach out to others and she actively tried to learn more about the Savior and the great plan of the Lord. With that faith that she showed, miracles happened in her life. She and her previous boyfriend were able to get back together and this time their love became sweeter and stronger. I remember her saying, “I would never demand that he change for me. Instead, I will love him more each day and accept him for who he is.” Her unconditional love for this man was able to change him for the better and I am a witness of that. They overcame this great test, were married in the temple, and were blessed with a son that has made their lives complete.

Can this be love? Yes, definitely.

“The Lord will send us a child eventually… maybe just not this month. Maybe a baby will come when the season changes,” are thoughts routinely expressed by daughters of God all over the world, who have been called, for whatever reason, to wait for the blessings of motherhood. And in a church that believes strongly in children and eternal families, this delay can be quite painful and finding faith can be hard.

Jhun and Chancel were married in the Manila Philippines Temple on May 25, 2013. Most of the couples who were married that year are now experiencing the joys of parenthood. While they, after much prayer, fasting, doctor visits, herbal supplements, alternative therapies, and countless “no’s” to the question, “is a baby on the way yet?” are still childless.

Fears

“We’ve tried everything. We have spent a lot of money on fertility check-ups and treatments. We’ve spent a lot of hours reading medical blogs on fertility. We’ve tossed unhealthy foods from our fridge and cupboards. We’ve tried every possible treatment. It’s like a roller coaster ride. Some days, my hopes are high because the doctors are very positive and some days are just full of the isolating hopelessness of infertility,” Chancel shared.

For Chancel, who’s turning 29 in November, it is difficult and scary, especially because studies say that fertility declines, as women get older. She also feels an overwhelming pressure from other people when they ask whether a baby is on the way. “I know they are just excited for me to have a baby, but that question gives me a very lonely feeling,” she shared.

Finding faith in the story of Sarah, Abraham’s wife

God promised Abraham that He would bless him and Sarah with a child. Abraham was ninety-nine years old and Sarah was ninety. They were both old so they doubted the Lord, but Sarah conceived a son and they named him Isaac.

The story of Sarah inspires her because it shows that God fulfills His promises no matter how impossible the circumstances are. “I have been promised in my patriarchal blessing that I will bear children and I am holding on to that promise. I know that He will not fail me. I know that He will give me that blessing, whether in this life or the next,” she added.

The faith not to have children

If someone wants to have children, why would she say that she has the faith not to have children? It is confusing and contradicting but Chancel has a very profound explanation. “I yearn for the blessing to have children but I know that God has His own timing. Having the faith not to have children means submitting all my desires to God and accepting His will. Having this faith helps me to understand that not having a child at this moment in my life has a purpose, which purpose I know not, but it is known unto the Lord.”

As Chancel submits her will to God, she also submits all her fears, discouragements and disappointments to the Savior Jesus Christ and lets the healing power of the Atonement fill her heart with hope and love. She shared, “Not having kids leaves a hole in my life that I can’t fill, but the Atonement of Jesus Christ helps me to feel whole.”

Are you happy?

“YES,” she shared without much contemplation. “Happiness is a choice everyone can make everyday. I don’t want to have the ‘I will be happy when…’ mindset because that would limit my happiness. I have many reasons to rejoice—I have a supportive husband and family, and I know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love me. That’s enough for me,” she shared. She also counts her blessings every day, which helps her see that God is in the details of her everyday life.

Chancel also understands that she is here on earth to grow and learn. “I know that I am here because Heavenly Father wants me to progress. When I decided to look past what’s lacking in my life, I started to see the many possibilities to grow spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Seeing myself a little better every day makes me happy. Happiness is a matter of mindset and perspective,” she added.

Bearing children is not the ultimate definition of motherhood

Chancel is a professional teacher. She teaches 3rd grade in a public school. She is grateful for her profession because it’s an opportunity to teach children. She considers this opportunity to inspire many kids, as God’s way of telling her that she doesn’t need to have kids to become a mom. “Embracing the responsibility to teach and nurture kids is embracing motherhood. God has been so good to me in giving me this profession,” she shared.

To all the wives who are childless

Chancel knows that childless wives have different circumstances but she knows that they have the same sorrows and heartaches. To them, she says, “It is okay to have gloomy days. It is okay to cry. But do not dwell on the crying. There are brighter days ahead. God knows our desires and He hears our prayers. Some might say that God doesn’t trust us enough to bear His spirit children but that is not true. God trusts us as much as He trusts those women who have kids. We must trust His will and His timing. Keep the faith and be believing.”

Surely, waiting for a blessing that we righteously desire can break our hearts sometimes and make us shrink. But when we wait upon the Lord’s timing, we know that we are not waiting in vain.

Happiness is the state that all people quest for. Some people spend their whole lives searching for ways to be happy. Some people think that it is something so grand that it is not reachable, while some find it as they apply gospel principles in their lives. In an article written by Professor Hank R. Smith, instructor of Religious Freedom Education at Brigham Young University, he shares seven principles that two specific chapters of the Book of Mormon teach us about happiness.

2 Nephi 5

In this chapter we read that Nephi and those who followed him fled into the wilderness because Laman and Lemuel wanted to take his life. They became a people who observed the laws and statutes of the Lord. Nephi wrote, “It came to pass that we lived after the manner of happiness.” We can follow the pattern of happiness that he sets in this chapter.

Maintaining Uplifting Associations

In verse 6 we learn that those who followed Nephi were those who “believed in the warning and revelations of God.” The influence of the people we associate with has a significant impact on our happiness. Let us surround ourselves with people who have uplifting spirits and whose actions will lead us to do good and follow Christ.

Aligning Actions with Beliefs

Nephi writes, “And we did observe to keep the judgments, and the statutes, and the commandments of the Lord in all things, according to the law of Moses.” Obedience to the commandments of the Lord brings happiness. Believing is not enough. We have to live a life according to the laws of the Lord. Because of obedience, the people of Nephi lived in a state of happiness and prosperity.

Accomplishing Hard Work

Verses 11 and 15 recount the toil of the Nephites. Prosperity was not showered on them without effort. They had to sow hard so they could reap their blessings. They were given fertile lands to till, strong timbers to build, and seeds to sow. They were industrious people. Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “God left the world unfinished for man to work his skill upon. He left the electricity in the cloud, the oil in the earth. He left the rivers unbridged and the forests unfelled and the cities unbuilt. God gives to man the challenge of raw materials, not the ease of finished things. He leaves the pictures unpainted and the music unsung and the problems unsolved, that man might know the joys and glories of creation.” Accomplishing things through hard work brings happiness.

Focusing On The Temple

Among the buildings that the Nephites built is a temple (verse 16). Happiness and temple blessings are tightly intertwined. The temple teaches us where we came from, why we are here, and where we are going. Knowing these truths gives more meaning to the choices we make. The temple gives a glimpse of eternal happiness.

4 Nephi 1

Verse 16 describes the people of Nephi, “There could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.” Let us find out what made it so.

Sharing What We Have

One father said to his child, “You should not look at your neighbor’s bowl to see if they have more. The only moment you need to look is to make sure they have enough.” We learn in verse 3 that the Nephites were happy because they had “all things common among them” and “there were not rich and poor.” The need for temporal and spiritual assistance is ever present among us but when we share what we have, we will be blessed with increased happiness and we will not envy what our neighbors have.

Belonging To A Family

Family relationships bring happiness. This happiness can be found in marriage, parenthood and being part of a family (verse 10). Feelings of security and love from family members can contribute immensely to our happiness.

Being A Peacemaker

Peace and contention cannot exist in one’s heart at the same time. The people of Nephi were happy because they had “no contention” among them (verse 2, 13, 15, 18). We must be aware of our intentions, words and actions in order to maintain peace in our hearts. Gordon B. Hinckley counseled, “Cultivate the art of the soft answer. It will bless your homes, it will bless your lives.” Peace brings happiness.

The Book of Mormon is full of gospel principles that we can use to help us in our quest for happiness. This has been given to us by the Lord as a compass so we can become happy like the Nephites while we are in this mortal probation.

“Wickedness never was happiness” isa sa pinaka sikat na line sa Book of Mormon (Alma 41:10). Pero para sa mga single the most famous line should be “Bitterness never was happiness!” Pero paano nga ba hindi maging bitter ang mga single sa araw ng mga puso?

Take it from the expert! Hahaha! Hindi dahil sanay ako maging single sa araw ng mga puso pero dahil I know how to make myself happy. First thing to do is count your blessings in life. Be grateful. I know it’s hard sometimes to appreciate things lalo na yung mga maliliit na bagay pero I assure you you’ll feel better. I remember my companion who helped me when I was very confused and was going through a challenging time sa mission (shout out to Madelyne Frame). She gave me an index card and she said, “Today we will write things which we think are evidence that Heavenly Father loves us.” At the end of the day, during evaluation, she showed me her index card and one thing that made me confused was that she had written down “yellow butterfly in the rice field.” So I asked her, “Why is that so?” then she answered, “Cause I know Heavenly Father knows how I love butterflies, so during our hard times walking in 40°C on the rice field every afternoon, I always see butterflies! And today it was yellow and I know Heavenly Father sent that because I love butterflies and you love yellow.”

Another thing is know yourself. What makes you happy? Oo alam ko gusto mo ng date, gusto mo kadate mo yung crush mo pero we don’t have control over those things. Except kung mag-eeffort ka or gagawa ka ng way talaga. Take it from the expert again, hindi solusyon ang may kadate sa Valentine’s Day para maging masaya ka. Go out with your friends, if may mga kadate ang iba mong friends find ways or activities na you can make this day special even if you are single. Plan a date kasama ang parents mo. Cook something new, go to the temple and have a date with Heavenly Father (the best). Movie marathon alone (I’ve tried it and it’s life changing.Hahaha!) Malay mo, last Valentine’s Day mo nang single!

Aside from all these things, be calm and have faith. Sabi nga sa Hebrews 11:1, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Lahat may “tamang panahon” pero this time ay ang tamang panahon para maging happy alone. Heavenly Father loves you. He will not leave you comfortless. Have faith. Keep walking, keep trying, there’s happiness ahead!
