On the 4th week of July, Timoteo Lovendino Manosig and Ma. Erlinda Lado Manosig, sent off their son to serve a 2-year full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John Timothy Manosig will be serving in the Philippines Cagayan de Oro Mission. He is the 13th missionary to serve from the Manosig family and he will be known as Elder Manosig for 2 years. Eleven of the thirteen children have already completed their missions. John’s sister, Clarissa, is currently serving in the Australia Melbourne mission.

Timoteo was baptized in May1974 and later married Erlinda in September 1976. Erlinda was baptized a year later in August 1977. His dream was to have an eternal family and this dream came true when his family was sealed for time and all eternity in the Philippines Manila Temple in 1989.

The Manosig family of 15 loves missionary work. They help bring souls unto Christ by participating in missionary work and activities. They also faithfully fulfill callings in the Church because they believe in serving the Lord by serving others. Their love of service comes from the love they feel at home and the love they have for the gospel of Jesus Christ. They have experienced the great blessings and joy of the gospel and they want others to experience the same. They have tried above all to raise their family in a gospel-centered home where the love of Jesus Christ is shown and felt, and missionary work is a way to serve the Lord.

The Manosig family is growing, since some of the children are starting to build families of their own. There have been three more temple marriages and four grandchildren. As they raise their children, their parent’s example becomes their inspiration to build a family who loves and serves the Lord. This inspiration is a legacy that will be passed on from generation to generation.

Missionary service

There are 74079 full-time missionaries currently serving in 418 missions around the world, with 4600 serving in 21 missions in the Philippines. These missionaries are ages 18 and above for men, and 19 and above for women. These men and women leave their homes for 24 months (for men) or 18 months (for women), at their own expense to proclaim the glad tidings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. To read more about missionary service, visit Missionary Work.

Eternal Families

One of the core doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that families can be together forever, which means that family relationships do not end at death but continues beyond the grave. The sealing ordinance that happens in the temple makes this possible. To read more about eternal families, visit The Sealing Ordinance Links Families Eternally.

Behind the limelight of being ESPN's NBA draft expert, Chad Ford finds inspiration being a peace-building professor at BYU-Hawaii.

The NBA season for this year is over and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ win has been the talk everywhere. However, with the NBA draft happening today, Chad Ford is in the limelight of the world of sports. Many people know him as ESPN’s NBA draft expert but there is a lot more about him that most people do not know.

Chad Ford is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, and a professor at Brigham Young University-Hawaii where he teaches peace building. So how did a draft expert become a peace-building professor?

A recent article by Deseret News talks about his journey as a young student inspired by the spirit of ‘ohana’ he felt while he attended BYU-Hawaii. He was impressed by how people at the university treated each other like family given their cultural differences and background.

David O. McKay’s powerful words, ““From this school … will go men and women whose influence will be felt for good toward the establishment of peace internationally,” inspired him to become part of this prophecy. He knew that this endeavor needed proper preparation so he enrolled at George Mason University to earn his master’s degree in conflict analysis and resolution.

(Photo Credit: Deseret News) In addition to being BYU-Hawaii’s director of the David O. McKay Center for International Cultural Understanding, Chad Ford also works for ESPN as an NBA draft insider and often shares his insight on television. (YouTube.com)

While he was preparing to become part of peace building through earning his graduate degrees, his love for sports also led him to build a sports website called SportsTalk.com. This website grew and eventually was acquired by ESPN giving Ford the chance to cover the NBA. However, he decided that his role as a husband and father was more important. He said, “The lifestyle of being a full-time NBA reporter wasn’t healthy for me and my family. While I loved basketball, there were other things in life that needed my full attention. It was time to make a change.” So when he received an invitation in 2005 to become a peace-building professor at BYU-Hawaii, he gladly accepted. With this new endeavor at the university, he took on the role of being ESPN’s draft expert.

Chad Ford’s life at ESPN says so much about his passion for NBA basketball, but his profession as a peace-building professor at BYU-Hawaii is where his heart really lies. He shares, “I get to go to work every day and be inspired by these young people who seriously come to this place and want to go back and make a difference in the world. To be able to work with them, help get them launched on their way, there is really no better gig in the world. It’s hard to beat that — go to work and be inspired every day.” He also shares that his inspiration to become part of peace building is the Lord’s gospel where peace is at its helm.

Family Home Evening is a program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where families come together, usually on Monday evenings, to strengthen family relationships and bonds. It is a time to learn about the gospel by sharing experiences and thoughts and doing various activities like family games, service in the neighborhood, sharing talents and other activities that interest the family.

This program, according to Dr. Daniel Mark, an Orthodox Jew and a member of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, is what America needs. And I second him by saying this is what the world needs. In his lecture titled “What Politics Can Learn from the Family: Jews, Latter-day Saints and the Case for Religious Freedom,” he shared his insights on the importance of family in a society and how the examples of Latter-day Saints in family home evenings can impact a society that respects religious freedom. Find out how the blessings of family home evening are being recognized not just by Latter-day Saints but also people from other religious faith.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emphasizes treating everyone with love, respect and kindness regardless of diverse beliefs and faith. This has been the Church’s stand even during the time of Joseph Smith Jr. We believe that each member of society has the liberty to choose to worship God and act upon the beliefs of his or her own choosing. It is the 11th Article of our Faith that “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may” (Articles of Faith 1:11).

The world is full of too much vile and ills. The world needs goodness and gentleness that we can all offer regardless of what doctrinal beliefs we want to follow. It does not require compromise of our beliefs. It only requires oneness in purpose and that is to be of service to our fellowmen. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and leaders of other faiths have declared their unified purpose in serving humanity with love through Interfaith Relations Dialogue with other faiths.
