“I feel like God has abandoned me. How can I reconnect with Him when He feels so far away?”

There are times in life when it feels like our prayers just aren’t being heard. We look around and see other people being blessed, and we can’t help but wonder, “Does God even care about me?”

When God seems quiet, it’s easy to feel like He has walked away. The enemy uses those moments to whisper lies like, “Why bother praying? God has forgotten about you.”

If we start to believe those lies, we naturally begin to pull back. And before we know it, the distance feels huge, leaving us asking, “Lord, where are You? Have You left me?”

If that’s where you are today, please know this: your feelings are valid, but you are not abandoned. Feeling far from God does not mean He has given up on you.

When you feel lost in the quiet, hold on to these gentle truths.

You Are God’s Child, and He Loves You

“If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Matthew 7:11

Because God is our Father, His love for us is constant. He will never step away from us or leave us to walk alone. However, there are times when we unknowingly step away from Him.

This happens when we stop choosing Him, when we forget to include Him in our daily decisions, or when we make choices that create distance between our hearts and His. God hasn’t moved—we have.

As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland beautifully reminded us:

“God is on His throne, and He loves you with a love that is perfect, constant, and endless… He does not walk away from us. It is we who walk away from Him.”

If you feel far from God today, remember that you don’t have to earn your way back into His affection. He is standing right where you left Him, waiting with open arms the moment you turn back toward Him.

What Separates Us from God?

It can be painful to realize how far away God feels, but it helps to understand how that distance happens. God never turns His back on us—instead, subtle habits and quiet struggles gradually create space between our hearts and His.

Here are four common things that pull us away:

1. Sin

Sin isn’t just breaking rules; it’s making choices that hurt our relationship with God. When we intentionally hold onto habits or actions that go against His commandments, it creates a spiritual rift. The guilt that follows naturally makes us want to hide from His light rather than draw closer to it.

2. Not Connecting With Him

Relationships fade when communication stops. When we go days or weeks without sincere prayer, studying His word, or spending quiet time in His presence, our spiritual momentum slows down. We don’t usually walk away from God overnight—we slowly drift simply by neglecting our connection with Him.

3. Choosing to Ignore His Promptings

God often speaks to us in a soft, still voice—nudging us to forgive someone, turn off a distraction, or reach out to someone in need. When we repeatedly ignore those quiet promptings, our hearts can become hardened. Over time, His voice becomes harder to hear, not because He stopped speaking, but because we stopped listening.

4. Shame

Shame is one of the enemy’s most powerful tools. While healthy conviction leads us back to God, shame tells us the lie that we are too broken, dirty, or unworthy to return to Him. It makes us feel like we have to fix ourselves before we can approach God, when in reality, He wants us to come to Him exactly as we are so He can heal us.

5. Forgetting To Listen To Him

It’s easy to turn prayer into a one-way conversation—a list of our requests, worries, and needs—without ever pausing to hear what He has to say in return. When we pray in a rush and immediately move on with our busy day, we miss the quiet comfort, guidance, and peace He longs to give us. Relationships grow through two-way dialogue, and when we forget to sit in stillness and listen, we miss out on the very moments where His presence feels most real.

6. Not Recognizing His Gentle Answers

When we are hurting, we naturally long for God to answer us in big, undeniable ways—a sudden relief, a clear sign, or a miraculous shift in our circumstances. When those dramatic answers don’t come, it is so easy to feel overlooked and believe He is silent. But often, His answers come far more gently: as a sudden wave of quiet peace while you cry, a comforting thought in the middle of the night, the warmth of a friend’s check-in, or just enough quiet strength to get through one more day. When we look for thunder, we can miss the quiet whisper of His closeness, even though He has been right beside us, softly holding us up the whole time.

How Do We Reconnect With God When We Feel He’s Abandoned Us?

Reconnecting with God doesn’t require a dramatic, overnight transformation. When we feel spiritually distant, the way back begins with small, deliberate choices to turn our hearts back to Him.

Here is how we can intentionally build that connection again:

1. Be Intentional in Connecting With Him

When life gets busy or overwhelming, it is easy to let our relationship with Heavenly Father slip into the background. Reconnecting requires us to intentionally carve out quiet moments to seek Him—even when we don’t feel an immediate response.

As Bishop Craig C. Christensen taught:

“Be intentional about creating time and space to hear God’s voice. As you use your agency to carve out time every day to draw close to God’s voice… over time His voice will become clearer and more familiar to you.”

Set aside a specific moment each day for simple prayer and scripture study. If it feels heavy right now, don’t overwhelm yourself. A few sincere verses or an honest prayer sharing your heart is enough to begin.

2. Repent of the Sins That Separate Us

Sometimes the distance we feel is the quiet guilt of holding onto things that pull us away from God. Repentance isn’t a painful punishment; it is the joyful gift of turning back toward His light and clearing away the barriers between our heart and His.

As President Russell M. Nelson lovingly reminded us:

“Nothing is more liberating, more ennobling, or more crucial to our individual progression than is a regular, daily focus on repentance. Repentance is not an event; it is a process. It is the key to happiness and peace of mind.”

Bring your mistakes, habits, and shortcomings to the Lord in prayer. He already knows them and longs to heal you. Trust that through Jesus Christ, repentance cleanses the slate so you can feel God’s presence clearly again.

3. Truly Listen to Him

It’s easy to do all the talking in prayer and forget to pause for the answer. Truly listening means slowing down our minds and turning down the noise of the world so we can tune into the Holy Ghost.

As Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf shared:

“If you want to hear God speak, go to a quiet place… Open your heart to Him. Listen for His voice. God speaks to the quiet heart.”

After you finish praying, stay on your knees or sit quietly for a few extra moments to listen. Often, God answers our deepest questions directly through the verses we read.

4. Acknowledge His Revelations to You

When we feel far from God, we sometimes overlook the quiet ways He has already answered us. Recognizing and giving thanks for the small moments of guidance, peace, or insight opens the door for more light to enter our lives.

As Elder David A. Bednar observed:

“Line upon line, precept upon precept… light cleaveth unto light. As we acknowledge and record the promptings and revelations we receive, the Lord will bless us with more.”

Keep a journal or note on your phone to record small impressions, tender mercies, or thoughts that come to you during prayer. Thank Heavenly Father specifically for the subtle ways He guides your steps, even when the big answers haven’t arrived yet.

5. Feel and Accept His Love

The hardest part of feeling abandoned is believing that we are unlovable. But God’s love isn’t dependent on how perfect we are or how strong our faith feels today. Reconnecting means opening our hearts to accept the constant love He has always had for us.

As Elder D. Todd Christofferson taught:

“God’s love is limitless and it will endure forever… He loves you just as you are, but He also loves you too much to leave you that way.”

Stop trying to earn His love. Accept that you are His child, and His arms are always stretched out to hold you. Notice the warmth of the sun, the kindness of a friend, or a sudden feeling of comfort—these are personal love letters from your Father in Heaven.

You Don’t Have to Walk This Path Alone

If there is one truth to anchor your heart to today, let it be this: God has not forgotten you, and He has not walked away.

The heavy silence you feel right now is not proof of His absence—it is a gentle invitation to draw near. Even when your steps feel shaky, your faith feels small, or your heart feels weary, your Heavenly Father is standing right where you left Him. He is watching for you with patient, endless love, ready to wrap you in His arms the very moment you turn back toward Him.

Reconnecting with Him doesn’t require perfection or a massive, overwhelming leap. It simply begins with one quiet step, one honest prayer, and one decision to open your heart to His grace.
